United Way of West Alabama’s Success By 6 early childhood development initiative will organize this year’s Read for the Record effort in preschools, childcare centers and classrooms in Tuscaloosa and surrounding counties on Tuesday, October 21st. Teachers, parents and volunteers will read Bunny Cakes by Rosemary Wells in order to create a record-breaking shared reading experience.
Jumpstart’s premiere national campaign, Read for the Record, mobilizes millions of children and adults to celebrate literacy by participating in this reading day each year. More than 2,460,000 children listened as Otis by Loren Long was read last year.
“In West Alabama, 6,321 students heard Otis,” said Ruth Gaddis, Success By 6’s Director. “We want to continue to increase the number of students who share in the reading experience each year.”
This year, people across the country will unite to read the children’s book Bunny Cakes. This is a comical story about Max and Ruby who both want to make their grandmother a birthday cake.
All elementary schools and many childcare centers are already involved. If you want to register your location as a reading site, or if you want to volunteer as a reader, contact Success By 6 at 205-345-6640.
